Review of Brown Eggs & Jam Jars

Most of the cookbooks we’ve chosen to carry are quite heavy on the practice of preserving foods – which makes sense to us because most of our other products support those habits. However, as a busy mom of 3, a farm girl at heart and wannabe homesteader, I fell in love with Aimee’s book as soon as I opened it up! (Psst…we are giving a copy away at the end of this post.)

Brown Eggs & Jam Jars CookbookAlthough Brown Eggs & Jam Jars is packed with beauty, it was really her take on the simple lessons and valuable skills that families can experience together as they embrace a variety of homesteading practices that made this book a must for our library.

What this book is not:

  • A guilt trip or a list of unreasonable habits you must put in place at once.

What this book is:

  • A healthy dose of encouragement for busy families wanting to eat better;

  • Grounded with reasonable ways to work better practices into everyday living;

  • Full of delicious family recipes for great seasonable eating;

  • An inspirational toolbox of tips for those with kids-  on engaging children onto the world of real food; from the growing, to the table or preserving.

We canned some of the applesauce for the pantry in our Orchard Road regular mouth pint jars.

We always make sure that we freeze a bunch in small jars for the kids to pack in their lunches. They using them instead of ice packs, and by Lidding Applesauce for the Freezerthe time lunch rolls around, it’s at that slushy stage that’s just perfect!

We use the 4oz Canning Jars  (for smaller appetites) and the 8oz Widemouth Canning Jars (for the larger appetites) because they’re tapered – safe for freezing. This is where I get to re-use those single-piece canning lids I’ve squirreled away. (I do check them for aromas that may be lingering from the lid’s previous life – garlic & applesauce don’t play well together. Usually, these hit the recycle bin right away, but sometimes I miss one.)

    I can as much as possible during the season so we can eat local as much as possible when things aren’t in season!

    We plant, weed and pick produce together. They also give their advice on what they would like to preserve new this year and what they may not like from last year.

    One way that I engage my Grandkids is taking them to pick blueberries every year. As soon as they are all a bit older, I will teach them to make jam.

    I make my kids part of preserving by including them in the planting and harvest. They get excited when they eat something from a jar they had a part in.

    By taking them blueberry picking and then spending the day at the beach. The berry farm is only 5 miles from Lake Huron where we enjoy the town of Lexington. Or there is Apple picking in the fall. We’ll take a hayride out to the pumpkin patch when we’re done. The kids love eating them as much as canning!

    My sons all know that I preserve foods by canning, freezing, or dehydrating, and when they visit, they see my jars all lined up on shelves. I write about my dehydrated recipes, and my eldest, who is a Boy Scout leader, also has a dehydrator for food he and my grandson eat on their camping trips. Because we live in hurricane -prone parts of the country, we know we must have ways of keeping food preserved that don’t require electricity. I vacuum seal my dehydrated food in jars, and when my newest daughter-in-law saw me vacuuming jar of chopped lettuce recently, she turned to my son and said, “we need to get that”, pointing to my machine. She’s a country girl who “gets it” and she will get one.

    I love how you involve your kids in the process. I do the same. I know that if I don’t catch them early on, I may not get them interested, sooo…We, as a family, preserve it and eat it, and hopefully they will do the same with their kids.

    i encourage my grandchildren to be mindful of what they eat by making certain they know where food comes from & helping them decipher what they ingredients list imply.

    We engage the family by doing a lot of the fall preserving things together: picking apples, processing them, making cider, helping to cook.. It’s not always easiest or fastest, but is definitely rewarding.

    We go blueberry picking together and then freeze the blueberries together. We are still enjoying ones that we froze last year.

    I have always tried to teach my children about canning, and gardening as I was taught.
    My grandmother taught me the importance of being able to feed ourselves no matter what comes.
    We have all reaped more than we have sown working together, great food, and even greater memories.

    I try to minimize the processed foods we buy and eat, and I freeze or can as much as I’m able so we still have that convenience factor. In fact, I’ll be canning up about 20 pounds of tomatoes tomorrow into basic splain sauce and pizza sauce, and I’ve been experimenting with my own ketchup recipe!

    15 years ago my husband and myself were in typical American bad health–overweight, lazy, facing medical problems. We changed everything! Now we have a wonderful vegetable garden, no longer wat processed foods (unless WE made them, like our wonderful homemade tomato sauce), and get plenty of exercise and fresh air from weeding, planting, and caring for the “farm”. No longer overweight, no longer lazy, and no more medical problems!

    We can, we garden and we raise our chickens. I teach my son where our food comes from…well most of it, we do like the occasional Pop Tart 😉

    We make it a family event and find tasks for everyone to pitch in. There’s usually plenty of singing and silliness to make the work more fun!

    Saturday morning breakfast, I always cook for my daughter and let my wife sleep in. It’s the most I get to talk to her alone all week! Chocolate chip pancakes are a favorite.

    I try to incorporate as much science as I can when showing my children how to cook. Such as the chemical reactions that occur when we use leavening agents.

    I like to capture as much of each season’s local crops and practice my canning at the same time by visiting farmer’s markets and making big batches of canned goods for gifts!

    We grow our own veggies and raise chickens for eggs… and the whole family gets involved in the gardening and chicken keeping process: planting, watering, feeding, cleaning, etc.

    Being a farm that grows produce, a great way to extend our fresh vegetables and fruit is to can it! We are excited to use our 1/2 pint jars that we just picked up from Fillmore Containers last week.

    We have a summer and fall vegetable garden that supports our joy in eating fresh, wholesome food. One of my favorite things is to make jam to enjoy throughout the year.

    I love to can and right now have 8 half pints of apple butter in the water bath. I love to pick fresh fruits and vegetables with my kids and my grandkids and then we try different recipes for canning and eating. Would love to win this book!

    I love canning and freezing all the wonderful fruits and veggies and having summer bounty in the winter. We live in an agricultural area so have access to so much. I feel blessed to have so much, so close.

    I like to teach them how to garden. It’s something about growing your own food that makes you want to try so much more. They get excited about eating something they have grown. You don’t have as many picky eaters that way and its a healthy way too!

    I mixed up tortilla dough this morning. It was messy, but I allowed my 4 year old to help me instead of shooing him away. He really liked digging his hands into the flour and getting dough on his fingers when I stirred in the water.

    My husband and myself are really just getting into canning. Now that may sound great for the young family but we are empty nest oldsters that decide this would be a great way to make food that we know is good for us, non-GMO and some great gifts to give for the holidays as well. It has been fun and am looking forward to do it better next year with all the excellent things we learned this season.

    I love canning jams and giving them to friends and family. Its very important for me to make sure my family knows where all their food comes from so I always try to make going to farmers markets and creating goodies from them fun and interesting for my family by adding new and interesting flavor profiles for everyone try!

    It’s just me and my husband right now. He does the gardening and we both do some preserving. I’m learning how to can foods, as well as fermenting some of them. Have done a bit of dehydrating this year, too. Hubby does most of the cooking these days due to schedules, but I do whatever baking gets done.

    This looks like an amazing cookbook. Although I have done lots of canning and preserving, I’ve never made applesauce before. Yours looks really good and not too difficult to make.

    I have recently been teaching my 34 year old daughter how to can. She has suddenly become quite interested in learning these skills. I have always been a “from scratch” cook and my daughter does well with this as well. She won blue ribbons for her homemade bread products in 4-H in elementary school. I try to can things I know my family loves – such as apple butter, jelly and salsa.

    When my kids were younger we went to pick your ownss. Nowadays its preserving a big box of appmes or drying orange peels. And let’s not forget homemade jellies at Christmas!

    This is my first year of canning my garden’s produce. I’ve also been dehydrating and freezing.
    Since my husband and I just retired we have been working together and it’s been wonderful.
    I actually cant wait for winter to arrive to start using everything!!!!

    I am just starting out, and one of the first things I did was buy a dehydrator. I’ve also been getting a little extra food here and there to stash away. Things like brown rice (non-gmo), oats, canned foods, and beans. Those will go a long way in an emergency situation. So now is the gearing up for the rest. I want to get a house with some land and have hens and a garden. I will be able to can and store foods.

    We garden together, weed, seed and harvest our garden’s bounty. Each month gives us new crops to attend to and harvest. I freeze, can and dry most of our garden’s fruits and vegetables. My family pitches in to help in preparing to preserve, everyone has something to contribute, many helpers makes the work alot more fun.

    We garden together and often stop and forage apples and pears from trees along the side of the road that no one seems to care about. They also help me to make applesauce and pear butter so we can all enjoy them when the snow flies!

    We are a family of two, and I do 99% of the growing, preserving, and cooking, so the best way I can engage the other family member is by feeding and nourishing him with the good food I produce and make for him. He loves it, and loves using my home-canned foods as gifts–he’s very proud of what I do.
